KAREN HAO: Yeah, so, because AI, modern-day AI systems are trained on massive amounts of data, and they’re scraped — that’s scraped from the internet, you can’t actually pump that data directly into your AI model, because there are a lot of things within that data. It’s heavily polluted. It needs to be cleaned. It needs to be annotated. So, this is where data annotation firms come in. These are middle-man firms that hire contract labor to provide to these AI companies to do that kind of data preparation.

And OpenAI, when it was starting to think about commercializing its products and thinking about, “Let’s put text-generation machines that can spew any kind of text into the hands of millions of users,” they realized they needed to have some kind of content moderation. They needed to develop a filter that would wrap around these models and prevent these models from actually spewing racist, hateful and harmful speech to users. That would not make a very good, commercially viable product.

And so, they contracted these middle-man firms in Kenya, where the Kenyan workers had to read through reams of the worst text on the internet, as well as AI-generated text, where OpenAI was prompting its own AI models to imagine the worst text on the internet and then telling these Kenyan workers to detail — to categorize them in detailed taxonomies of “Is this sexual content? Is this violent content? How graphic is that violent content?” in order to teach its filter all the different categories of content it had to block.

And this is an incredibly uncommon form of labor. There are lots of other different types of contract labor that they use. But these workers, they’re paid a few bucks an hour, if at all. And just like the era of social media, these content moderators are left very deeply psychologically traumatized. And ultimately, there is no real philosophy behind why these workers are paid a couple bucks an hour and have their lives destroyed, and why AI researchers who also contribute to these models are paid million-dollar compensation packages simply because they sit in Silicon Valley, in OpenAI’s offices. That is the logic of empire, and that harkens back to my title, Empire of AI.

AMY GOODMAN: So, let’s go back to your title, Empire of AI, the subtitle, Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI. So, tell us the story of Sam Altman and what OpenAI is all about, right through to the deal he just made in the Gulf, when President Trump, Sam Altman and Elon Musk were there.

KAREN HAO: Altman is very much a product of Silicon Valley. His career was first as a founder of a startup, and then as the president of Y Combinator, which is one of the most famous startup accelerators in Silicon Valley, and then the CEO of OpenAI. And there’s no coincidence that OpenAI ended up introducing the world to the scale-at-all-costs approach to AI development, because that is the way that Silicon Valley has operated in the entire time that Altman came up in it.

And so, he is a very strategic person. He is incredibly good at telling stories about the future and painting these sweeping visions that investors and employees want to be a part of. And so, early on at YC, he identified that AI would be one of the trends that could take off. And he was trying to build a portfolio of different investments and different initiatives to place himself in the center of various different trends, depending on which one took off. He was investing in quantum computing, he was investing in nuclear fusion, he was investing in self-driving cars, and he was developing a fundamental AI research lab. Ultimately, the AI research lab was the ones that started accelerating really quickly, so he makes himself the CEO of that company.

And originally, he started it as a nonprofit to try and position it as a counter to for-profit-driven incentives in Silicon Valley. But within one-and-a-half years, OpenAI’s executives identified that if they wanted to be the lead in this space, they “had to” go for this scale-at-all-costs approach — and “had to” should be in quotes. They thought that they had to do this. There are actually many other ways to develop AI and to have progress in AI that does not take this approach.

But once they decided that, they realized the bottleneck was capital. It just so happened Sam Altman is a once-in-a-generation fundraising talent. He created this new structure, nesting a for-profit arm within the nonprofit, to become this fundraising vehicle for the tens of billions, and ultimately hundreds of billions, that they needed to pursue the approach that they decided on. And that is how we ultimately get to present-day OpenAI, which is one of the most capitalistic companies in the history of Silicon Valley, continuing to raise hundreds of billions, and, Altman has joked, even trillions, to produce a technology that ultimately has a middling economic impact thus far.

The party took place on May 13 and included Tzipi Hotovely, the Israeli ambassador to the UK, and Labour MP Maria Eagle as speakers. Days after the event, UK media organization Middle East Eye reported that the event was not advertised and the museum’s staff were asked to leave early.

Only 24 CEOs on the 2025 Fortune 500 list are founders or co-founders of the companies they lead. That amounts to just 4.8% of the index. Yet this small group commands outsized influence.

US official pleaded to keep Harvard national security grant, court records show

A Pentagon official begged her bosses not to cancel a Harvard University grant aimed at curtailing biological threats, arguing that pulling it would pose “grave and immediate harm to national security.”

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) director of contracting said the grant funded a Harvard research team that had reached a “pivotal juncture” in a project addressing the “biological threat landscape,” according to Monday court filings in the university’s lawsuit against the Trump administration, first reported by The Boston Globe.

The official was unnamed in the filings.

Harvard, which is suing the administration over roughly $2.5 billion in frozen funding, has declared the cuts to be illegal and haphazard and obtained government records to prove their case.

In the filing, the lawyers detail the risk of cutting off funding to projects related to public health and national security concerns.

In one instance, Harvard researchers were working on a military project known as the AMPHORA program, aimed at increasing awareness of emerging biological threats, when the Department of Defense (DOD) on May 12 informed the university it had terminated the grant funding the effort, according to a memorandum filed by Harvard’s lawyers in federal court.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed the cancellation of that military grant, as well as others, the filing notes.

Musk, who until recently had largely scaled back posting about politics, on Wednesday alone has already posted or helped amplify posts on X criticizing the bill more than 25 times.

Michael Boren, founder of a billion-dollar tech company, Idaho ranch owner and Trump donor, has clashed with the U.S. Forest Service for years.

He was accused of flying a helicopter dangerously close to a crew building a Forest Service trail, prompting officials to seek a restraining order. He got a caution from the Forest Service, and criticism from his neighbors, when he built a private airstrip on his Hell Roaring Ranch in a national recreation area. And in the fall, the Forest Service sent a cease-and-desist letter accusing a company that Boren controlled of building an unauthorized cabin on National Forest land.

Now, Boren is President Donald Trump’s nominee to oversee the very agency he has tussled with repeatedly.

On Tuesday, the Senate Agriculture Committee held a confirmation hearing on Boren’s nomination to be the undersecretary of agriculture for natural resources and environment, a role that would put him in charge of the Forest Service.

At the hearing, Boren described his past interactions with the Forest Service as “oppressive” but said that he and the agency had “always come around to a settlement that works for everyone.” He said he would follow the advice of government ethics lawyers on matters in which he had a conflict of interest.

If confirmed, he would manage an agency that oversees almost 200 million acres of public lands across the United States, including maintaining trails, coordinating wildfire response and overseeing the sale of timber and other resources. He would also oversee the Natural Resources Conservation Service, which helps farmers and ranchers conserve natural resources on their own land.

If Republicans in the U.S. Senate pass the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” Oregonians currently enrolled in Medicaid are more likely than people in nearly any other state to lose coverage and end up uninsured, according to analyses from several national think tanks.

The budget reconciliation bill reduces federal spending using a number of policies that will cut enrollment in Medicaid, including a work requirement for some and more frequent eligibility checks for all. The work requirement would take effect in January 2027.

To keep their children busy in the hot summer sun of West Asia, Israeli parents have a very Israeli solution: they get their children as young as six to dress up as “terrorists” or shoot “terrorists” using an assortment of weapons employed by the Israeli occupation forces.

“A center in the country called Fauda Base offers children aged six and up the opportunity to become undercover agents, practice shooting weapons, dress up as terrorists, and play as fighters taking over an Arab village,” reports Israeli outlet HaMakom. The summer base is named after the Netflix series, Fauda, which depicts a commander of the Israeli Musta’ribeen (Mista’arvim in Hebrew) unit, pursuing Palestinian resistance fighters. The camp is run in collaboration with Yes, the producers of the television series, and its instructors are alumni of the Israeli occupation forces.

The musta’ribeen are Arabic-speaking and Arab-looking Israelis who are used by the occupation to infiltrate the Palestinian resistance and civil society in order to extract vital information.

Fauda Base, according to HaMakom, “simulates a day in the life of a fighter in a special undercover unit, and invites participants — whether they are six years old or scoutmasters — to take part in a special operation.”

From HaMakom:

First, visitors to the complex “will hear about a security incident that has occurred and receive an operational order.” In order to comply with the operational order, “participants will have to become an operational combat team in an undercover unit,” and undergo “a series of training sessions that include shooting training, combat in built-up areas, hand-to-hand combat, and more.”

“In our activities, you can shoot all types of weapons used by special forces,” the [Fauda Base] website says. “M4 rifles, Glock pistols, Tavor rifles, Uzis, sniper rifles, Kalashnikov rifles and more!” To get into the atmosphere, they will also receive combat equipment that includes personal weapons, commando uniforms, or undercover clothing — “all depending on their role in the force,” it says. “Some will play terrorists, some innocent civilians, and some undercover.” The participants wear keffiyeh, galabeya, and a variety of beards. They also paint their teeth to make them look dirty or missing.

Finally, the participants move to “Al Mahmoudiyah” — “our village, which includes a small market, a restaurant and several buildings, where Fauda’s special activities take place.” During a conversation with the complex’s representative, it was clarified to us that this is an activity involving “a lot of laughter and fun.”

That “special activity” involves shooting plastic or porcelain balls at “jumping targets”: targets marked in advance in the village area, with the shooting carried out alongside instructors. Another stop is Krav Maga games. While the website states that the activity is allowed for ages 15 and up (and in its English version, ages 12 and up), in a phone call we were told that age six is the lower limit — even for shooting training.
