Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg has visited Donald Trump at his resort in Mar-a-Lago - a matter of months after the president-elect threatened him with jail.

Tony Greenstein’s new book opens on a personal note: “from an early age, I had my doubts about Zionism.”

The son of an Orthodox Jewish rabbi, Greenstein has for decades been a tireless Palestine solidarity activist and an uncompromising anti-Zionist.

Greenstein explains cogently how he came to reject the ideology on which Israel was founded.

“I found it difficult to reconcile Marxism, a universalist political ideology that believes in the unity of the oppressed and the working class, with Zionism, an exclusivist ideology.”

In a school debate he played “devil’s advocate and in the process became convinced of the case against Zionism.” He has never looked back since.

His early doubts were shored up after learning that American Zionist leaders had opposed the entry of Jewish refugees from Europe during World War II. So began a life-long project: researching the Zionist movement’s collaboration with fascism.

Greenstein has been writing about this topic for years on his valuable and prolific blog. He’s also an occasional contributor to The Electronic Intifada and we had him on our podcast not long ago.

It speaks volumes about the sorry state of British publishing that Greenstein has had to resort to self-publishing.

Back in the 1980s, Lenni Brenner’s important book on the same topic, Zionism in the Age of the Dictators, was put into print by independently minded Scottish publisher Christopher Helm.

So Zionism During the Holocaust is breaking a long silence in print. Brenner’s book is both cited and critiqued by Greenstein.

As well as bringing the story up to date, Greenstein’s book is more comprehensive than Brenner’s. He gives chapter and verse on the history of Zionism’s ideological affinity for European fascism.

He explains how “the Nazi leadership quoted Zionist sources to validate their claims that Jews could not be assimilated.” Quoting pro-Israel historian Edwin Black, Greenstein writes, “It was difficult for German Jews to refute Nazi claims ‘when a loud and visible group of their own continually published identical indictments … Zionism had become a tool for anti-Semites.’”

Zionism is at its heart a racially exclusive ideology for the promotion of white supremacy – but it also wants a specifically Jewish supremacy in Palestine.

The International Criminal Court finally indicted Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, but this action is merely performative. If arrest warrants do not include war criminals like Joe Biden and other U.S. officials, they are ultimately empty attempts to maintain a semblance of legitimacy.

After months of procedural stalling, allegations of sexual harassment against the lead prosecutor and systematic threats from the United States and its Western allies, it did not appear that the International Criminal Court (ICC) would even execute the final phase of the criminal indictment process and Israeli impunity would continue. But on November 20, 2024, six months to the day after Karim Khan, chief prosecutor for the court, submitted his request for the indictments of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant and Hamas leaders Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, the court finally indicted Netanyahu, Gallant and threw in Mohammed Deif who Israel claims to have assassinated, as they did to Sinwar and Haniyeh.

There was sincere rejoicing around the world after the arrest warrants were issued. Finally, it was thought, there would be some accountability for the brutal savagery of the Israeli settler-colonial apartheid state’s horrific crimes against the Palestinian people. For some, it also meant that just maybe the days of the ICC acting as a convenient instrument of Western white power might actually be over.

However, there are two elements to this indictment that reaffirm the biases and double standards of the ICC.

First, while many around the world proclaimed that the indictments confirmed what major international human rights groups, human rights lawyers and scholars and the general public could plainly see, and that was the reality that Israel was perpetrating an active genocide, the indictments were not based on the issue of genocide but on war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Reflected in the language of the indictment , it was clear that Netanyahu and Gallant “each bear criminal responsibility for the following crimes as co-perpetrators for committing the acts jointly with others: the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.”

It goes on to say, the court “also found reasonable grounds to believe that Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Gallant each bear criminal responsibility as civilian superiors for the war crime of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population.”

But the question then becomes, if it is clear that Israel is using starvation against a specific ethnic group with the intention to murder numbers of that group and deploys other “inhumane acts” that Israeli authorities directed toward the “civilian population”, why, and this is the second element, wouldn’t the ICC at least go as far as other legal scholars and international human rights organizations and call it for what it is – genocide?

Let’s look at some of the “inhumane acts” mentioned in the indictments:

The court said that “both individuals intentionally and knowingly deprived the civilian population in Gaza of objects indispensable to their survival, including food, water, and medicine and medical supplies, as well as fuel and electricity, from at least 8 October 2023 to 20 May 2024. This finding is based on the role of Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Gallant in impeding humanitarian aid in violation of international humanitarian law”

Moreover:

“By intentionally limiting or preventing medical supplies and medicine from getting into Gaza, in particular anaesthetics and anaesthesia machines, the two individuals are also responsible for inflicting great suffering by means of inhumane acts on persons in need of treatment. Doctors were forced to operate on wounded persons and carry out amputations, including on children, without anaesthetics, and/or were forced to use inadequate and unsafe means to sedate patients, causing these persons extreme pain and suffering. This amounts to the crime against humanity of other inhumane acts.”

And now let’s look at the definitions of genocide reflected in the United Nations’s Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide :

Article II

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

It appears from the language of its indictment that there were both genocidal consequences and more importantly, intent!

Operating from the context of the Genocide Convention, Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories directs our attention to the fact that “genocide is defined as a specific set of acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.”

“Specifically, Israel has committed three acts of genocide with the requisite intent: causing seriously serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group, deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part, and imposing measures intended to prevent birth within the group.”

Furthermore, “the genocide in Gaza is the most extreme stage of a long-standing settler colonial process of erasure of the native Palestinians.”

So, why does it appear that the ICC avoided including this interpretation in the indictments of Netanyahu and Gallant when the evidence of genocide is clear? Perhaps there is an explanation of the omission. Article III section (e) of the Genocide Convention says quite clearly that complicity with genocide is also a punishable crime.

Having to be forced to indict the leadership in Israel in order to retain any shred of credibility after years of obsequious service to the West, the court had gone far enough and was loath to engage in the next logical step - having to identify and charge the genocide enablers – the United States of America.

The ICC prosecution and judges probably concluded it was wise to pass that on to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that eventually will have to render a judgement on the South African case charging Israel with genocide along with the court’s own preliminary judgement demanding that Israel cease engaging in any actions that might lead to the conditions of genocide. Israel completely ignored that demand and the U.S. fought and is fighting to pre-empt the court rendering a judgement unfavorable to Israel.

It will be interesting to see how the court handles this issue, especially the issue of genocidal complicity once it is forced to render the obvious, that Israel is conducting a genocide in Palestine.

The position of human rights defenders and anti-colonial and anti-imperialist forces around the world must be unequivocal, without an indictment of U.S. president Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and even Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, any analysis of Israeli behavior that does not result in a judgement against Israel and prosecution of all of the responsible parties will be seen as more evidence that all of the post-war structures set up by Western imperialism must be completely abandoned and new ones must be constructed.

But we cannot wait for bureaucratic practices of anachronistic international structures reflecting the international balance of power in 1945. The world is very different today, which the defenders of global European white supremacy find impossible to accept. That is precisely why the U.S. along with their European allies and the comprador nations aligned with the dying Western order and imploding U.S. empire are prepared to use whatever means necessary to escape their inevitable loss of global hegemony.

The fantasy that Israel, a colonial project set-up at the beginning of the end of classical colonialism in 1948 could continue its crude colonial racist apartheid system into the 21st century is a case in point. The psychopathology of white supremacy is reflected in the narcissism and disconnection from reality that can result from being the boss for so long.

What Must Be Done?

“Now is the time to throw off all hesitations, open up new fronts of struggle and to launch every protest, demonstration, and anti-imperialist action – from the ballot box to the barricades – as an act to deepen the crisis of imperialism.

The Western world in its present form is finished. But it will not go quietly into the night. It must be crushed, its power stripped away and neutralized in a way that it can never be the threat to collective humanity that it poses today.

That is going to take a horrific fight. Palestinians are making the sacrifices that are required when the fight is about individual and collective dignity. The people of Lebanon are also going to have to make decisions regarding what they are willing to sacrifice just as the Vietnamese, the Koreans, Chinese, Algerians, and South Africans have done, and the colonized peoples of the U.S. must do.

As Francesca Albanese correctly and courageously said “colonial amnesia of the West has condoned Israel's colonial settler project”, adding that “the world now sees the bitter fruit of the impunity afforded to Israel. This was a tragedy foretold.”

What is also foretold is that if we do not defeat the U.S./EU/NATO Axis of Domination our sojourn on this planet will come to an abrupt and final end much more quickly than any of us realize.

Therefore, our task is clear and must be clearly articulated.

Thanksgiving has always offered a false and comforting narrative to Americans. Instead of representing the massacres that settlers committed against Indigenous people, the holiday offers us rosy pictures of collaboration and breaking bread.

But as we approach a Thanksgiving that, for many of us, will break with tradition (attending dinner with extended family and friends seems superspreader-level dangerous right now), here are a few pieces by Native and Indigenous writers that shed a more honest light on American history and offer a new set of traditions to ground us in this time of uncertainty.

How the Irish Became White

Several weeks ago I participated in a three day anti-racism training workshop which was conducted here in Pittsburgh. The facilitators were Rev. Joe Brandt, Executive Director of Crossroads Ministry, and Ms. Barbara Jordan, a community organizer and educator from the Peoples Institute for Survival and Beyond, a New Orleans' based sister organization to Crossroads. Besides providing a very excellent and intense experience of just how systemic racism is in our society, on a more personal level it was a very rich reunion with these two highly skilled and committed trainers. I had spent a day with Barbara down in New Orleans during the UU Urban Church weekend this past January and she had a very good feeling about UUs. She was delighted to meet someone from Pittsburgh who "had eaten her food, in her community." Just as delightfully, Joe and I realized that we had shared a ministerial experience some years back in the South Bronx. We learned and talked about all of our mutual friends. What a treat for me. Crossroads Ministry is the group which Mel Hoover has collaborated with in developing our UU anti-racist training experiences, so there were nice personal connections all around.

Early on in the workshop there was an exercise which focused on "cultural racism and white cultural identity." Whites in the workshop were asked to talk about white culture. Most couldn't or wouldn't. The expression meant nothing to me. Nevertheless, we all struggled with it. As time went on we discovered that, in a sense, it was a trick question. The facilitators wanted the whites to struggle and to discover that the expression did have little or no content. Racial designations, white and black, are totally social constructs. "What then," they asked, "would you say about your culture? How would you define your culture and your relationship to it?" Though most of the whites had a difficult time talking about her/his culture - some resisted pretty strenuously - the trainers took a clear stand: if whites are to come to the multi-cultural table, they - we - must reclaim our individual cultural backgrounds. In many ways, we were reminded, African Americans are way ahead of European Americans in retaining their cultural identities.

In a sense, the exercise wasn't as tough for me as for some others. I immediately thought of Boston, Irish and Catholic. It was clear to me that's where this UU had to start; the music, the humor, the food - as limited as the menu is - the faith, the working class, it was all there. I was having a good time; it felt very good on many levels. In a conversation later in the workshop, Joe mentioned a recently published book entitled "How the Irish Became White." It's a book about Irish emigration, race, class and U.S. labor history. I knew immediately I had to get a copy and find out just what it was about.

It was a tough read. It was a story of primarily Irish Catholic emigration before and after the potato famine - roughly 1840 to the Civil War - and that people's struggle to survive in this white, Protestant world. It's a sympathetic yet tragic story of how race has been a defining characteristic in U.S. culture and how the race question has also plagued the white working class in this country. One might say that it is a story of how the Irish exchanged their greenness for whiteness, and collaborated with the dominant white culture to continue the oppression of African Americans.

Ironically, Irish Catholics came to this country as an oppressed race yet quickly learned that to succeed they had to in turn oppress their closest social class competitors, free Northern blacks. Back home these "native Irish or papists" suffered something very similar to American slavery under English Penal Laws. Yet, despite their revolutionary roots as an oppressed group fighting for freedom and rights, and despite consistent pleas from the great Catholic emancipator, Daniel O'Connell, to support the abolitionists, the newly arrived Irish-Americans judged that the best way of gaining acceptance as good citizens and to counter the Nativist movement was to cooperate in the continued oppression of African Americans. Ironically, at the same time they were collaborating with the dominant culture to block abolition, they were garnering support from among Southern, slaveholding democrats for Repeal of the oppressive English Act of the Union back home. Some even convinced themselves that abolition was an English plot to weaken this country.

Upon hearing of this position on the part of so many of his fellow countrymen now residing in the United States, in 1843 O'Connell wrote: "Over the broad Atlantic I pour forth my voice, saying, come out of such a land, you Irishmen; or, if you remain, and dare countenance the system of slavery that is supported there, we will recognize you as Irishmen no longer." It's a tragic story. In a letter published in the Liberator in 1854, it was stated that "passage to the United States seems to produce the same effect upon the exile of Erin as the eating of the forbidden fruit did upon Adam and Eve. In the morning, they were pure, loving, and innocent; in the evening, guilty."

Irish and Africans Americans had lots in common and lots of contact during this period; they lived side by side and shared work spaces. In the early years of immigration the poor Irish and blacks were thrown together, very much part of the same class competing for the same jobs. In the census of 1850, the term mulatto appears for the first time due primarily to inter-marriage between Irish and African Americans. The Irish were often referred to as "Negroes turned inside out and Negroes as smoked Irish." A famous quip of the time attributed to a black man went something like this: "My master is a great tyrant, he treats me like a common Irishman." Free blacks and Irish were viewed by the Nativists as related, somehow similar, performing the same tasks in society. It was felt that if amalgamation between the races was to happen, it would happen between Irish and blacks. But, ultimately, the Irish made the decision to embrace whiteness, thus becoming part of the system which dominated and oppressed blacks. Although it contradicted their experience back home, it meant freedom here since blackness meant slavery.

An article by a black writer in an 1860 edition of the Liberator explained how the Irish ultimately attained their objectives: "Fifteen or twenty years ago, a Catholic priest in Philadelphia said to the Irish people in that city, 'You are all poor, and chiefly laborers, the blacks are poor laborers; many of the native whites are laborers; now, if you wish to succeed, you must do everything that they do, no matter how degrading, and do it for less than they can afford to do it for.' The Irish adopted this plan; they lived on less than the Americans could live upon, and worked for less, and the result is, that nearly all the menial employments are monopolized by the Irish, who now get as good prices as anybody. There were other avenues open to American white men, and though they have suffered much, the chief support of the Irish has come from the places from which we have been crowded."

Once the Irish secured themselves in those jobs, they made sure blacks were kept out. They realized that as long as they continued to work alongside blacks, they would be considered no different. Later, as Irish became prominent in the labor movement, African Americans were excluded from participation. In fact, one of the primary themes of How the Irish Became White is the way in which left labor historians, such as the highly acclaimed Herbert Gutman, have not paid sufficient attention to the problem of race in the development of the labor movement.

And so, we have the tragic story of how one oppressed "race," Irish Catholics, learned how to collaborate in the oppression of another "race," Africans in America, in order to secure their place in the white republic. Becoming white meant losing their greenness, i.e., their Irish cultural heritage and the legacy of oppression and discrimination back home. Imagine if the Irish had remained green after their arrival and formed an alliance with their fellow oppressed co-workers, the free blacks of the North. Imagine if they had chosen to include their black brothers and sisters in the union movement to wage a class battle against the dominant white culture which ruthlessly pitted them against one another.

Oh that there had been other Irish Americans such as the soldiers from St. Patrick's Battalion who fought on the side of Mexico in the War of 1848, who did remain green and fought against oppression. So perhaps we Irish in America must reclaim our greenness and, perhaps, our anti-racism trainers are right that we all must reclaim our cultural heritage and bring it to the multicultural table. The only stipulation is that we do it in a decidedly anti-racist manner and in solidarity with oppressed classes of people. Maybe we can all share in the sentiment proclaimed in the 1991 movie about Dublin, "The Commitments," when it was stated that "The Irish are the blacks of Europe, so say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud."

Youssef Khalifa: ‘I make myself small and I stay quiet’

I don’t often speak up about these things. I learned from an early age that it was less uncomfortable to stay quiet, and play along.

I was born in 1983 to a Libyan father and an Irish mother, in the Coombe Hospital in Dublin. I grew-up in Tallaght. Until you hear my name or look at my passport, no-one notices me. It’s easier to not be noticed and to get on with it - this is the big lesson I have taken from primary school, and carry with me to this day. I have passing privilege if I keep my life small. So I do. No-one should have to do this.

When I was 14 years old in an Irish-speaking secondary school, a teacher I looked up to was talking about racism. I brought up an experience I had in primary school of racial discrimination by an adult. The teacher, who I am very fond of to this day, replied to my story with a laugh and consoled me that the person I was talking about was actually a really nice guy. I gave up.

I gave up when a guard stopped me for cycling too fast in Templeogue Village and upon hearing my name asked me where I was from. When I said Dublin he asked “and what is your status in this nation young man?” I replied “citizen”. What teenager knows to say that? I was a kid, he was in power, and he went straight to implicit threat of deportation.

I resign myself to being stopped in airports as a suspected terror risk. I have had my passport taken away for further processing many times. This isn’t racial profiling, it’s just racism. But I am lucky I have the privilege to keep travelling. That’s what an Irish passport gave me. Many are not that lucky. Many do not have the choice to hide behind a passport, or behind silence.

My wife thinks I act tense in airports when we travel together. I do! I am tense and resigned. I am sick of being stopped randomly. So to not get stopped, by teachers, by guards, by the world at large, I make myself small and I stay quiet. It’s easier, and it’s exhausting.
