As of Monday morning, roughly half of the states were under either a National Weather Service (NWS) heat advisory or an excessive heat warning. Much of the heat was clustered on the Western and Eastern coasts and comes as many states, such as California, Utah and others, have already been exposed to extreme heat for days without relief.

Even a “reasonably modified” version of the Northrop Grumman-made Sentinel will likely cost $140.9 billion, 81% more than the program’s original cost estimate of $77.7 billion, the Pentagon said in a statement. If Sentinel continues on its current path without being modified, the likely cost will be about $160 billion, it said.

As warming weakens ocean circulation, the seas could increasingly become a source of heat-trapping gas, a new study finds.
“Some climate models predict a 30 percent slowdown in the ocean circulation due to melting ice sheets, particularly around Antarctica,” said study author Jonathan Lauderdale, an environmental scientist at MIT.
Ocean currents cycle carbon from the surface into the deep ocean, but they also bring carbon up from those depths. Scientists have long assumed that slower circulation would diminish both the amount of carbon drawn down from the atmosphere and the amount dredged up from deep waters. In this scenario, the ocean would continue to be an overall carbon sink.
But the new modeling study finds that slowing currents could also disrupt the upwelling of nutrients from the deep to the surface, starving the phytoplankton that absorb carbon.
The decline of phytoplankton would be self-reinforcing, as the tiny creatures also convert iron in the ocean into a form that other phytoplankton can consume. The diminution of iron would cause phytoplankton to further decline, meaning they would take up less carbon either from the atmosphere or from the deep. The findings were published in Nature Communications.
But on a more emblematic, microcosmic level, a symbol of Homo Consumopethicus and Homo Retailopethicus: Mount Everest’s highest camp is littered with tons of garbage. Cleanup will likely take years.
You saw this coming to your neighborhood? I live in Lincoln county, on the Oregon coast, and places like Lincoln City, population 10,000, swell to 50,000 on hot weekends in Portland and Vancouver and elsewhere east of us. FIFTY thousand flusing toilets, showering off their bacon fat bodies, endless streams of cars and trucks and RVs, and the food and booze and ice, man. Taxes to conmpensate for all infrastrucutre waning, and the e coli in the water, on the beautiful beaches, man oh man! Paradise Lost!
Protesters in Barcelona have sprayed visitors with water as part of a demonstration against mass tourism.
Demonstrators marching through areas popular with tourists on Saturday chanted “tourists go home” and squirted them with water pistols, while others carried signs with slogans including “Barcelona is not for sale.”
Fucking Iberia. Imagine those first illegal aliens, the Spanish, the French, the Krauts, the InBred UnUnited Queen-Queer-Dumbers sliding by the millions to the “America?”
According to official figures, almost 26 million visitors made an overnight stay in the Barcelona region in 2023, spending €12.75 billion ($13.8 billion).
However, the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turístic says that these visitors increase prices and put pressure on public services, while profits from the tourism industry are unfairly distributed and increase social inequality.
We (THEY) went from this:
The Inca Empire: How 200 Conquistadors Brought It Down — The massive Inca Empire was brought to its knees by less than 200 Spanish conquistadors, who killed tens of thousands of Incan warriors.
To This!! Spanish protesters squirt water pistols during Saturday's protest.
The growing discontent in Barcelona echoes similar protests in other parts of Spain.
In April, locals in the Canary Islands mobilized to protest against excessive tourism, blaming visitors for pricing them out of their homes and causing environmental damage.
These complaints are common to many tourist hot spots around the world, which have experienced record visitor numbers recently as the travel industry has roared back from a pandemic-induced downturn.
And to think all this shit, these fucking animal-mammal stains, Homo Bellum, Homo Retailopethicus, Homo Consumopethicus started here! Mutts of Mayhem.
Scientists have discovered a never-before-seen hydrothermal vent system hiding in a highly unlikely spot on the Arctic seafloor. The deep-sea vents, which pump out scalding-hot water and mysterious metals, are located in an area researchers thought was geologically dead.
The newly discovered vents, named after various entities from Norse mythology, lie at a depth of around 9,850 feet (3,000 meters) southwest of Svalbard — a Norwegian archipelago within the Arctic Circle. The field, which is named the Jøtul hydrothermal field after a race of beings from Norse mythology known as the giants, or "jötnar," is around 3,300 feet (1,000 m) long and 650 feet (200 m) across, and contains a mix of active and dormant vents.
One of the largest vents, which has multiple chimneys and sprawling rocky branches, is named Yggdrasil after the cosmic tree of life that connects the nine realms of Norse mythology. Another set of vents, known as the Nidhogg spring, gets its name from the serpent-like dragon fabled to have lived in Yggdrasil and gnawed on its roots.
Key Points
Since their discovery, hydrothermal vents have been relevant to concepts that surround the origin of life. At the simplest level, there are two kinds of hydrothermal vents: the hot (approximately 350°C) black smoker type, the chemistry of which is driven by the magma-chamber that resides below ocean-floor spreading zones, and the cooler (approximately 50–90°C) Lost City type, the chemistry of which is driven not by magma, but by a process called serpentinization.
Serpentinization is a H2-producing geochemical reaction that has been operation in hydrothermal systems for as long as there has been water on the Earth. Its reducing power is sufficient to generate substantial amounts of abiogenic CH4 and short hydrocarbons in the effluent of some modern hydrothermal vents.
In the study of the origin of life, major unresolved issues concern the source of sustained chemical energy and the source of reduced carbon compounds. The CO2-reducing geochemistry of modern hydrothermal vents provides a model for our understanding of how such processes might have been possible at the dawn of biochemistry.
Methanogens and acetogens satisfy their carbon needs through the acetyl-coenzyme A pathway, an energy-releasing pathway of CO2 fixation, if given sufficient environmental H2 and CO2. The authors consider the idea that the CH4-producing and acetate-producing geochemistry of hydrothermal vents is the abiogenic precursor of modern microbial CH4 and acetate production.
This suggests that the evolutionary starting point of microbial metabolism might have been an energy-releasing geochemical process in which CO2 served as the acceptor for electrons that stemmed from H2 generated by serpentinization. The naturally chemiosmotic nature of alkaline hydrothermal systems, such as Lost City, might be important to the origin of life issue, but in a somewhat unexpected way that, in turn, helps to explain why chemiosmotic coupling through ATPases is universal throughout the microbial world.
of all the places on early earth likely to sustain conditions necessary for the origin of life, the hydrothermal vents probably came the closest. Their high temperatures and pressures coupled with their mineral richness would contribute to bringing together many of the key ingredients for the earliest metabolic pathways – dissolved methane, ammonia, hydrogen, metal sulfides that could act as catalysts. And once the building blocks of life were created, over time, chance interactions might result in some of them assembling into proto-cells and later gaining the property of self-replication (the ability to copy themselves) – the hallmark of life. Such proto-lifeforms would ultimately move out from the vent surroundings, spreading through the oceans, making this the actual ‘Garden of Eden’ from which all life on earth would eventually descend.
In 2017, a team of researchers reported observing fossilized microorganisms in rocks collected near a hydrothermal vent near Canada. They dated these fossils as an astounding 3.77 – 4.28 billion years old. While still controversial, if validated, this finding would make these fossils the oldest evidence of life on earth, appearing only a few hundred million years after its formation. This would lend strong support to the theory of life originating at hydrothermal vents.

In my fucking in-box (I am not a MoveOn member, whatever that means):
Dear MoveOn member,
Yes, these are extremely difficult and painful times. People are demoralized.
The presidential debate a week ago Thursday was a disaster. Trump lied, lied, and lied. Biden did not successfully defend his record or expose Trump for the fraud that he is. Further, he did not bring forth a strong agenda for his second term.
Trump told us that "everybody" wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade. Lie! More than 60% of the American people disagreed with that horrific Supreme Court decision.
Trump told us that illegal immigrants are destroying Social Security because of the benefits they receive. Lie! Illegal immigrants do not receive Social Security benefits. In fact, they put some $10 billion a year into the program that they do not benefit from.
Trump ignored the question on climate change. Maybe it's because he has the unique and insane view that climate change is a "hoax" created in China.
Trump refused to answer the question about whether he would accept the election results if he lost. Maybe that's because he won't, and because he doesn't believe in democracy. In the last election, he told the world that the only way he could lose that election was if there was fraud—to be determined by him. His views haven't changed.
Friends, I do not possess a crystal ball, and I have no brilliant political insights as to what the campaign might look like over the next few days or weeks.
But this I do know: Democrats will not win this election, for the White House or Congress, unless they focus on the very real and pressing concerns facing working families. Yes, the president has established and should defend a good record during his first term. But much, much more needs to be done to address the economic, social, and environmental crises facing the working class. That agenda must be articulated NOW. The policy contrasts with the Republicans must be made clear.
Republicans are proud to have overturned Roe v. Wade. We must pass legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade and guarantees women the right to control their own bodies.
Republicans think climate change is a hoax. We must create millions of good jobs transforming our energy system away from fossil fuel.
Republicans want to cut Social Security. We must strengthen and expand Social Security by lifting the cap on taxable income.
Republicans want to cut Medicare. We must expand Medicare to cover dental, hearing, and vision.
Republicans want to give tax breaks to billionaires. At a time of massive income and wealth inequality, we must make the wealthy finally pay their fair share.
Republicans oppose raising the minimum wage to a living wage. We must raise the minimum wage to a living wage—at least $17 an hour.
Republicans ignore the crisis in low-income and affordable housing. We want to end homelessness and build millions of units of affordable housing.
Republicans want to make it harder for workers to join unions. We must grow the trade union movement, end illegal anti-union actions, and pass the PRO Act.
Republicans want to spend even more money on the military-industrial complex, as though $1 trillion were not enough. We must stop defense companies from war profiteering and, like every other agency of government, run the military more efficiently and cost-effectively.
Yes, I, and I suspect many of you, have had significant disagreements with the Biden administration. But I do know that time and time again he has been willing to support and sign progressive legislation ... but only if we were able to get it to his desk.
So our job this November is clear: First, we must defeat Donald Trump, the worst president in modern American history.
But we must also elect as many progressives to Congress as we possibly can so that we can get legislation to the president's desk that will improve the lives of working people.
That is what I intend to focus on between now and November, and I hope you will join me in that fight. During the past few weeks, we've had great meetings in Ohio and Wisconsin. And that's just the beginning.
