At around three in the afternoon on June 9th, in a courtroom on the fourth floor of Brooklyn’s federal courthouse, in Brooklyn Heights, a jury passed a note to the court officer, indicating that, after two days of deliberation, it had reached a verdict in the case of Nicole Daedone, the founder of a sexual-wellness company called OneTaste, and Rachel Cherwitz, its former head of sales. Both women had been charged with one count of forced-labor conspiracy, and both had pleaded not guilty. Daedone, tanned and blond, in a slate-blue pants suit, had smiled politely as the jury filed back into the courtroom. Her defense attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, who famously has a tattoo on her right biceps with the words “Not Guilty” spelled out in block lettering, sat next to her in a puff-sleeve black blazer. In 2021, she successfully overturned Bill Cosby’s sexual-assault conviction.

Born c. 1970 in Valparaiso, Indiana, Bonjean was a classically trained opera singer, and worked at a rape crisis center in Chicago. She studied at DePaul University and Loyola University Chicago School of Law.^[1]

In 2021, she helped free Bill Cosby on his sexual assault charges.^[2] Also in 2021, she was hired by Larry Hoover to attempt to appeal his sentence under the First Step Act. The request was denied by Harry Leinenweber.^[3][4] Also in 2021, she represented Keith Raniere, the founder of NXIVM. He was sentenced to 120 years in prison.^[5]

Bonjean was R. Kelly's lead lawyer during his 2022 sexual abuse trial. She described Kelly as a "victim of extortion and financial exploitation", and called one of his accusers a pathological liar.^[6]

In 2023, Harvey Weinstein hired her to defend him in his sexual abuse case.^[7]

Bonjean is known for her aggressive litigation strategy. She has a "NOT GUILTY" tattoo on her arm.^[8] She is a Conservative feminist, and often trash talks the jury and judge.^[9]

Over the past five weeks, I’ve been present at the trial of United States v. Cherwitz and Daedone — a case that, despite being presented as a legal proceeding, felt more like an ideological trial. This was not a regular court case. Well, actually I don’t even know what a “regular” court case is anymore. After these last few years, and especially these last five weeks, I’ve become more and more disillusioned with our justice system in the US, and frankly in the world. At stake here was not just these two women’s futures and the future of the spiritual and religious path they follow, but core questions about freedom of belief and spiritual expression.

I’ve never been much of a religious freedom person; in fact, I’ve never considered myself religious. My grandparents were orthodox Jewish, but my parents were very secular. So, “religion” wasn’t really talked about, and when it was, it was somewhat dismissed. We did holidays, we spoke Hebrew, but god and religion weren’t talked about, except when I was in Israel with my grandmother whose main focus was making sure I had a Jewish husband and Jewish wedding.

Until about 10 years ago, when I started meditating. Not just any meditation, but Orgasmic Meditation. I had no idea that this simple practice — one involving a meditation cushion, a timer, and human connection — would be my gateway into spirituality.

As I got more in touch with myself through the practice, I became more in touch with the universe, and with a connection to something greater than myself. I remember the moments of believing, of realizing, yes there is something here. Moments of praying naturally, something I had never grown up doing and always somewhat looked down on. Moments of seeing a divine plan.

Founded in San Francisco in 2004, the company established branches in New York City, London, Austin, Texas, and Boulder, Colorado, and later sold the city branches to franchisees. Daedone sold her shares in the business for $12 million in 2017. Her co-founder, Rob Kandell, an unindicted conspirator who testified under subpoena with government immunity, was bought out for $1.5 million three years earlier.

While defense lawyers have characterized the OneTaste community as a sexually liberated environment where open relations flourished, former employees labeled it a strictly managed sex cult where leaders assigned members “research partners” to share a bed and “OM” with. They were ordered to end relationships that didn’t serve the group.

Several employees worked for years to pay off debt for monthslong courses that cost over $10,000 to become trained as an “OM” coach.

In those courses, Daedone was described as a “guru” who drew in followers with ideas borrowed from various religions, cults, and BDSM practices. She also espoused controversial ideas about sexual assault: In videos shown in court, she cast aspersions at rape victims and explained that her father, who she claims was a serial child molester, was not a bad person. Rather, she said, “He was so fourth dimensional that he couldn’t confine himself to the arbitrary laws of the third dimension,” using terms pulled from Alcoholics Anonymous, which Daedone adopted as part of the OneTaste vernacular.

In his 2004 book XXX-Communicated: A Rebel Without a Shul, Luke Ford wrote about a conversation with Goldstein, in which Ford asked Goldstein why Jews were dramatically overrepresented in the porn industry.

He answered, "The only reason that Jews are in pornography is that we think that Christ sucks. Catholicism sucks. We don't believe in authoritarianism. Pornography thus becomes a way of defiling Christian culture and, as it penetrates to the very heart of the American mainstream (and is no doubt consumed by those very same WASPs), its subversive character becomes more charged."

Ford then asked, "What does it mean to you to be a Jew?"

To which Goldstein responded, "It doesn't mean anything. It means that I'm called a kike."

Ford also asked, "Do you believe in God?"

Goldstein said, "I believe in me. I'm God. Screw God. God is your need to believe in some super being. I am the super being. I am your God, admit it. We're random. We're the flea on the butt of the dog."^[36]

Jews:In November 1968, Goldstein and his partner Jim Buckley, investing $175 each (equivalent to $1,580 today),^[6] founded Screw, a weekly New York City tabloid. It featured reviews of porn movies, peep shows, erotic massage parlors, brothels, escorts and other local offerings of the adult entertainment industry. Such items were interspersed with news concerning sexual topics, critical reviews of sexual books, and hardcore "gynecological" pictorials. Goldstein regularly ran, without permission, photos and drawings of celebrities.

"Screw grew from a combination of many factors, chief of which was my own dissatisfaction with the sex literature of 1968 and my yearning for a publication that reflected my sexual appetites," Goldstein wrote. "I may be making a lot of money, but I really believe I'm doing some good by demythologizing a lot about sexuality", he said in a Playboy Interview.

Not that Screw couldn’t be artful. Goldstein once asked Salvador Dali to design an entire issue, and almost succeeded. And like Flynt, Goldstein also had his headline legal moments, culminating in a Wichita obscenity trial after he pissed off the FBI with a story titled “Is J. Edgar Hoover a Fag?”

While you may never see Goldstein on the silver screen, Screw does have a cameo in Woody Allen’s Bananas. And yes, that’s the perv himself on The Daily Show in 1999. The porn king, however, has since fallen from glory.

srael has increasingly employed sexual, reproductive and other forms of gender-based violence against Palestinians as part of a broader effort to undermine their right to self-determination and carried out genocidal acts through the systematic destruction of sexual and reproductive healthcare facilities, according to a new report issued today by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.

The report documents a broad range of violations perpetrated against Palestinian women, men, girls and boys across the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 7 October 2023 that constitutes a major element in the ill-treatment of Palestinians and are part of the unlawful occupation and persecution of Palestinians as a group.

“The evidence collected by the Commission reveals a deplorable increase in sexual and gender-based violence,” said Navi Pillay, Chair of the Commission. “There is no escape from the conclusion that Israel has employed sexual and gender-based violence against Palestinians to terrorise them and perpetuate a system of oppression that undermines their right to self-determination.”

The release of the report was accompanied by two days of public hearings held in Geneva on 11-12 March, during which the Commission heard from victims and witnesses of sexual and reproductive violence and medical personnel who assisted them, as well as representatives from civil society, academics, lawyers and medical experts.

The report found that sexual and gender-based violence – which has risen in frequency and severity – is being perpetrated across the Occupied Palestinian Territory as a strategy of war for Israel to dominate and destroy the Palestinian people.

Specific forms of sexual and gender-based violence – such as forced public stripping and nudity, sexual harassment including threats of rape, as well as sexual assault – comprise part of the Israeli Security Forces’ standard operating procedures toward Palestinians.

Other forms of sexual and gender-based violence, including rape and violence to the genitals, were committed either under explicit orders or with implicit encouragement by Israel’s top civilian and military leadership, the report said.

A climate of impunity also exists with regard to sexual and gender-based crimes committed by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, with the aim of instilling fear into the Palestinian community and expelling them.

“The exculpatory statements and actions by Israeli leaders and the lack of effectiveness shown by the military justice system to prosecute cases and convict perpetrators send a clear message to members of the Israeli Security Forces that they can continue committing such acts without fear of accountability,” said Pillay. “In this context, accountability through the International Criminal Court and national courts, through their domestic law or exercising universal jurisdiction, is essential if the rule of law is to be upheld and victims awarded justice.”

The Commission found that Israeli forces have systematically destroyed sexual and reproductive healthcare facilities across Gaza. They have simultaneously imposed a siege and prevented humanitarian assistance, including the provision of necessary medication and equipment to ensure safe pregnancies, deliveries and post-partum and neonatal care. These acts violate women’s and girls’ reproductive rights and autonomy, as well as their right to life, health, founding a family, human dignity, physical and mental integrity, freedom from torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment, and self-determination and the principle of non-discrimination.

Women and girls have died from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth due to the conditions imposed by the Israeli authorities which have denied access to reproductive health care - acts which amount to the crime against humanity of extermination.

The Commission found that Israeli authorities have destroyed in part the reproductive capacity of Palestinians in Gaza as a group through the systematic destruction of sexual and reproductive healthcare, amounting to two categories of genocidal acts in the Rome Statute and the Genocide Convention, including deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of Palestinians and imposing measures intended to prevent births.

“The targeting of reproductive healthcare facilities, including through direct attacks on maternity wards and Gaza’s main in-vitro fertility clinic, combined with the use of starvation as a method of war, has impacted all aspects of reproduction,” said Commissioner Pillay. “These violations have not only caused severe immediate physical and mental harm and suffering to women and girls, but irreversible long-term effects on the mental health and reproductive and fertility prospects of Palestinians as a group.”

The Commission found an increasing proportion of female fatalities in Gaza, which have occurred at an unprecedented scale as a result of an Israeli strategy of deliberately targeting residential buildings and using heavy explosives in densely populated areas. The Commission also documented cases in which women and girls of all ages, including maternity patients, were targeted - acts that constitute the crime against humanity of murder and the war crime of wilful killing
