The American Council on Education yesterday sent a letter co-signed by 68 higher education organizations to the Department of Education, calling on the agency to rescind its recent “Dear Colleague” letter that was meant to clarify its position on diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and programs in higher education. Marquette leaders have been monitoring the situation since the “Dear Colleague” letter was issued on Feb. 14.

ACE and its cosignatories, including the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, explained how the “Dear Colleague” letter “has only led to confusion on campuses about their compliance responsibilities.” This confusion arises from the fact that “efforts to build inclusive and diverse campus communities are neither discriminatory nor illegal.” Indeed, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts explicitly noted in the admissions practices case referenced above that diversity-related goals in higher education are both “commendable” and “plainly worthy.”

The Office of Civil Rights’ threats of enforcement actions to begin by Feb. 28 — with no guidance on how the OCR views the values noted above, or how the OCR understands all affected institutions’ First Amendment speech and free exercise of religion protections, along with their Fifth Amendment due process protections — puts our nation’s colleges and universities in an impossible position.

The nonprofits are using the money from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, created by Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, to offer loans for efforts such as solar installations and electric buses. Doug Walsh, a professor of entomology at the WSU Prosser research station, says the federal employees who were fired were some of the youngest scientists with great careers ahead of them.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation will increase its giving over the next two years in response to what it calls a “crisis" prompted by the Trump administration's freeze on federal foreign aid and the now- suspended freeze on federal grants.

"This is a major crisis for our sector and it’s a time when those of us who can do more should do more," said John Palfrey, president of MacArthur Foundation, in an interview Wednesday with The Associated Press.

Palfrey announced the increase in a blog post on the foundation's website, saying, “The cliff of funding from federal programs has sent budgets underwater in field after field, and people and communities in the United States and abroad will suffer.”

This “pay to pray” model, as one article has it, “monetizes religious participation while catering to wealthy donors who may use the event to exert influence over [Trump’s] administration. The controversy underscores broader concerns about the role of money in politics and the ethical boundaries of presidential inaugural committees.”[2]

Another criticism that emphasizes religious values over greed is that the event attaches a price tag to a prayer service, undermining its spiritual purpose. Indeed, as with so many other religion-related actions by Trump—praying with Paula White and her coven; holding an upside-down bible in front of St. John’s church in D.C. after using tear gas to clear the area of protesters—one wishes that the word “blasphemy” was more a part of our cultural and civic conversation.
