Jeff Bezos, the billionaire owner of The Washington Post, personally made the decision to kill an endorsement of Vice President Harris for president that the newspaper’s editorial board had drafted, the outlet reported Friday.

Citing two sources it said had been briefed on the sequence of events who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, the Post reported its editorial board had drafted an endorsement of Harris that was to be published before the election.

“The decision not to publish was made by The Post’s owner — Amazon founder Jeff Bezos — according to the same sources,” the newspaper reported.

The Hill has requested further comment from the Post.

In a note to readers Friday, Post publisher Will Lewis, whom Bezos hired earlier this year after the departure of former CEO Fred Ryan, said the company anticipated the backlash it was receiving Friday.

“We recognize that this will be read in a range of ways, including as a tacit endorsement of one candidate, or as a condemnation of another, or as an abdication of responsibility,” Lewis wrote. “That is inevitable. We don’t see it that way. We see it as consistent with the values The Post has always stood for.”

The decision was being widely criticized Friday, with several Post staffers and outside observers blasting Bezos and Lewis for the move.

The Post has endorsed a candidate for president in every election dating back more than 30 years.

An improved version of the famous Molotov cocktail is the Chemical Ignition Molotov Cocktail (CIMC). This incendiary device contains chemical reagents that enable its self-ignition. The analysis of anions from CIMC residues by capillary electrophoresis (CE) allows the identification of the reagents used to produce the device, and provides forensic analysts with valuable information. Although, sulfate, chlorate, chloride, and perchlorate anions have been recently proposed in the literature as target anions to determine the CIMC composition, the identification of some of them could be controversial due to their presence in the environment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify highly reliable anions capable of indicating the components used to prepare these self-initiated devices. The relationship among the detected anions in CIMC residues and the reagents employed in their elaboration is discussed. Some anions have been proposed as anionic markers of CIMC as incendiary devices. Additionally, the viability of different CIMC compositions was studied.

Introduction

Molotov cocktails, also known as petrol bombs, are a classic homemade weapon used over the last 70 years [1]. These devices were used during the Winter War (when its name became popular) and they also played an important role in Spanish Civil War and in World War II used as anti-tank weapon and incendiary weapon against cities and towns [2]. They are inexpensive weapons easy to make and use. These devices could be classified as homemade explosives or improvised explosive devices (IEDs) according to the definition of IED [3]. However, a more accurate and specific description of these kinds of devices would be “improvised incendiary devices (IIDs)” [4]. According to Spanish police, there are a large number of forensic cases where IIDs are used as weapons in acts of vandalism, terrorist activities, street violence, street-fighting, violent riots, etc. As an example of their extended use, more than 80% of the workload handled by the explosives area of the Spanish Criminalistic Service of Guardia Civil is related to IIDs or pyrotechnic material.

Several types of these IIDs have been reported [1], [5], [6], [7], [8] using different reagents and production methods. One of them, the Chemical Ignition Molotov Cocktail (CIMC) [7], is initiated after throwing it, not needing a wick. The CIMC self-ignition begins when the bottle is broken against a hard surface and the reagents inside the bottle come into contact with the external reagents placed outside it. These devices consist of glass bottles or jars filled with 1/3 (v/v) concentrated sulfuric acid and 2/3 (v/v) flammable liquid, like petrol. Potassium chlorate is the external component [1], [5], [6]. It is usually placed into a piece of paper fixed with tape, which is wrapped around the bottle (depicted in Fig. 1). The bottle can also be inside a cloth or plastic bag which also contains the potassium chlorate. Fire starts as a consequence of the exothermic reaction produced by the combination of the concentrated sulfuric acid and the potassium chlorate. Other compounds, such as sugar, can be added to potassium chlorate to make the reaction more exothermic and to cause stronger and longer combustion. Used motor oil may also be added inside the bottle, acting like fuel and making the fire last longer.

In addition, CIMCs are characterized by (i) self-ignition, which makes the CIMCs safer for their handling, (ii) easy preparation and use, (iii) pocket-size facilitating transport, (iv) plenty of freely accessible information on the Internet about its preparation [5], [6], and (v) components are easy to purchase. These characteristics make CIMCs as ideal weapons to cause devastating results such as citizen stampedes, attacks against people inside vehicles, arsons, or to be used as a distracting weapon. Therefore, the analysis of the residues of IIDs has a tremendous importance in the police laboratories, to interpret the samples collected at a crime scenario. These samples usually include no more than few pieces of broken glass, stickers or caps, making their analysis a challenging issue.

For that purpose, the first approach is to measure the pH to determine the presence of an acid in the device composition. A few analytical techniques such as gas-chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) were used to determine the volatile components in IIDs [8], [9]. Ion chromatography (IC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) are the most suitable separation techniques to analyze the anions present in IED residues [10], [11], [12], [13], [14]. They use different separation mechanisms which make them ideal complementary techniques for analyte confirmation, as recommended by Forensic Laboratories Guidelines [15]. Recently, CE was proposed to determine the anionic composition from IID residues [7]. In this work, the target inorganic anions detected were sulfate, chlorate, chloride, and perchlorate. The authors reported that the qualitative determination of these anions could help to identify the original device's composition. Nevertheless, the detection of some of them could be controversial and attributable to some type of contamination. In this regard, some environmental surveys in the U.S. and U.K. demonstrated the high presence of anions such as chloride, nitrate, phosphate or sulfate in public areas (public transport, hotels, road surfaces, mailboxes, etc.), whereas perchlorate, cyanate or thiocyanate anions are rarely detected [16], [17].

In this current research, different samples of CIMCs were prepared and then analyzed to identify reliable markers of these devices. The CIMC chemical reactions were justified. Besides, the viability of different CIMC compositions was studied.

What you need for a “Molotov cocktail”

1. A glass bottle, 0.5 or even 0.7 liters or 1 liter. Bottles with thin walls are easier to break, which is necessary for the Molotov cocktail to work. Soviet-style vodka bottles are good, wine or beer bottles are worse.

2. Gasoline.

3. A rag as a wick. Usually it is a strip 10-15 centimeters thick and 20-35 cm long. It should never be a synthetic fabric, only cotton. Synthetic can partially dissolve. In addition, after ignition, synthetics burn very quickly and can burn out before the cocktail reaches the target.

4. Acetone. To make the cocktail more effective and burn longer, hotter, and more concentrated.

5. Foam. It needs to be broken into small pieces. Styrofoam, which already consists of small balls, is well suited. (Machine oil can be used instead of acetone and foam)

6. Crust. Preferably dense. For the safe launch of a Molotov cocktail.

How to make a Molotov cocktail

In the simplest case, gasoline is simply used. In this case, it fades quickly and does not stick to the surface of the object. To increase the burning time and temperature, as well as the adhesion of the incendiary mixture to the object, so-called napalm is used.

The easiest way to make a mixture of “napalm”:

1. Add the foam to the acetone and stir until it dissolves. About 100 g of acetone is enough to start with, and the foam is added until a thick syrup is formed. You may need much more foam than it seems at first glance.

2. Then gasoline is added to the “syrup” in a 1:1 ratio. The mixture burns very well and for a long time, sticking to the place where the “projectile” hit, adhering tightly to almost any surface. Some types of foam dissolve better and more evenly in a mixture of gasoline and acetone.

The homemade “napalm” decomposes into layers in just one day: the heavier elements settle at the bottom, while the lighter ones end up at the top. Then it becomes just a mixture of its elements.

Fill the bottle about 3/4 full of liquid or less if there is a shortage of mixture. If the projectile is not going to be used immediately, the bottle is tightly closed with a cork or metal screw cap. Since the mixture disintegrates during storage, the “Molotov cocktail” becomes less and less effective with each passing hour.

The strip of cloth is inserted so that about half of it is inside the bottle, then it is soaked with the mixture. The other half should be soaked in the same liquid separately. In the simplest case, the free end of the wick simply hangs down and is set on fire.

Safety precautions

The main thing is that there should be no sources of open fire nearby. Secondly, gasoline and acetone fumes are dangerous to health. Therefore, it is recommended to make it outdoors, in extreme cases – in ventilated rooms.

To increase the safety of the person using the projectile, the fabric strip is not completely wetted. The part that goes near the neck of the bottle remains dry. The wetted part should be taped to the bottle to avoid burning yourself when throwing it.

If available, you can also use hunting matches instead of a wick – these are large matches that do not go out in any wind. They are also taped to the bottle. This is much safer than a “classic” simple fuse. Hands should be washed well after making the Molotov cocktail and gloves should be worn during use.

How the “Molotov cocktail” works

The fabric ignites easily and does not go out in the wind. You need to light it with a good lighter, preferably one that doesn’t go out in the wind. You have to throw hard and on the hard stuff. The bottle should break on impact.

Plastic chemical phthalate causes DNA breakage and chromosome defects in sex cells, new study finds

Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) is a chemical that makes plastic more flexible and durable, and is found in many consumer products, including food packaging, personal care products and children's toys. Previous studies have shown that BBP interferes with the body's hormones and affects human reproduction and development, but the details of how it impacts reproduction have been unclear.

In the new study, researchers tested a range of doses of BBP on the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and looked for abnormal changes in egg cells. They saw that at levels similar to those detected in humans, BBP interferes with how newly copied chromosomes are distributed into the sex cells. Specifically, BBP causes oxidative stress and breaks in the DNA strands, which lead to cell death and egg cells with the wrong number of chromosomes.

Based on these findings, the researchers propose that BBP exposure alters gene expression in ways that cause significant damage to the DNA, ultimately leading to lower quality egg cells with abnormal chromosomes. The study also showed that C. elegans metabolizes BBP in the same way as mammals, and is impacted at similar BBP levels that occur in humans, suggesting that C. elegans is an effective model for studying the impacts on people. Overall, the study underscores the toxic nature of this very common plastic ingredient and the damage it causes to animal reproduction.
