Accurate chronological construction for two young stalagmites from the tropical South Pacific

The oldest known stalactite is found in Lehman Caves at Great Basin National Park and is estimated to be 2.2 million years old. While many speleothems (cave formations) are much younger, this one is unique due to its age.

More about stalactites and their age:

Formation:

Stalactites form when mineral-rich water drips from the cave ceiling, depositing calcite and other minerals over long periods.

Growth Rate:

The growth rate of stalactites is typically very slow, ranging from 0.1 to 10 centimeters per thousand years.

Factors Affecting Age:

Stalactite age can vary greatly depending on the amount of calcite in the water, the water's drop rate, and the specific conditions within the cave.

Other Notable Formations:

While Lehman Caves has the oldest known stalactite, Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico is home to the "Giant Dome", a large stalagmite estimated to be 60 million years old. Also, the Sudwala Caves in South Africa are known for their ancient dolomite rock formations, which were laid down about 2.8 billion years ago, though the caves themselves are much younger.

Turning those fucking brats into more deranged people: Army to end contract for longtime mental health program for military kids and families overseas

Leaders with the nonprofit National Military Family Advocacy Organization, which works to protect the rights of military families, said mental health support is especially vital for military families overseas, where access to resources is often very limited. In many overseas military communities, military behavioral health clinics are short-staffed and even routine medical checkups can be difficult to get off base because of high demand.

“We are acutely aware of the obstacles and service gaps that significantly affect our military children,” said retired Air Force Col. Penny Bailey, the group’s president. “Many victims have expressed urgent concerns about the lack of mental health counseling available to military children during times of abuse, separation, divorce, and loss.” Bailey said DODEA’s plan to add school psychologists is encouraging. But if they don’t provide the same services as ASACS, “it could have a significantly negative impact on the military children,” she said.

We will eat fucking data, and babies will bottle feed on Chat GPT, man. We are fucked, triple fucked.

A partnership between OpenAI and Oracle could lead to the construction of another large data center in Wyoming.

OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, announced Tuesday it plans to rent 4.5 gigawatts of data center power — enough to provide power to 750,000 homes — from Oracle.

Oracle is a computer technology company founded in 1977 by Larry Ellison. One of the company’s divisions is called Oracle Cloud, which operates a series of data centers around the world.

From fucking Foreign Policy rag. It's all about the data

Argument

An expert’s point of view on a current event.

“Why are we putting data centers and research hubs in Dubai?” U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna in a video posted on X in May. “We should have those high-paying new technology jobs in the United States. What happened to ‘America First’?” U.S. President Donald Trump’s czar for artificial intelligence, David Sacks, fired back: “The deal has a matching investment provision, so UAE will fund the build-out of AI infrastructure in the U.S. at least as large and powerful as that in UAE. And in UAE, the vast majority of the compute will be owned & operated by American cloud companies, to serve the region as well as the Global South.”

Theirs was not a mere rhetorical spat. It centered on the outcome of Trump’s May trip to the Gulf: the U.S.-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership, anchored by an AI data center in Abu Dhabi. Stargate UAE, an infrastructure platform and the inaugural project in the OpenAI for Countries initiative, will be part of the data center, which will be one of the world’s largest. Developed in close coordination with the U.S. government and personally championed by Trump, the partnership entails a dual investment: a 1-gigawatt (GW) cluster in Abu Dhabi (with the first 200 megawatts expected to go live in 2026) and an Emirati commitment to expand U.S. Stargate infrastructure. Saudi Arabia is adopting a similar approach through HUMAIN, the Public Investment Fund’s flagship AI venture. Backed by deals with, among others, Nvidia and Qualcomm, HUMAIN is also designed as a Saudi platform with regional and global ambitions, targeting model training, inference, and AI services across emerging markets—all firmly embedded in the U.S. tech stack. Together, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and the broader Gulf region, are positioning themselves as potential backends of AI for emerging markets across Asia and Africa, laying the groundwork for a U.S.-aligned model of AI partnerships that could, over time, outpace China in the global AI race.

Google was named as the company behind a proposed data center in Franklin Township, according to documents obtained by WFYI.

The documents shared with WFYI were provided by the planner for the City of Indianapolis in response to a resident of Franklin Township’s public records requests. The main document outlines questions from the city planning staff for the developer.

In response to one of the questions, the developer for the data center project mentioned the concealed company by name.

“If the Google team is OK with it, I suggest sharing two elevations,” the respondent wrote.

WFYI asked a Google spokesperson multiple times to confirm or deny if the company is behind the Franklin Township data center proposal, but the spokesperson did not comment, even as they answered several of WFYI’s other questions.

Up until this point, the name of the company has been hidden from the public while the proposal to rezone more than 460 acres to build a massive data center campus on Indianapolis’ southeast side continued to move through official channels.
